Martin County Indiana was formed in 1820 from Daviess and Dubois Counties. It was named for Maj. John T. Martin of Newport, Kentucky. The county seat, Shoals, was incorporated on platted in 1844 under the name “Memphis” and is best known for the Jug Rock, the only free-standing table rock formation east of the Mississippi River.
Martin County was once a huge musseling industry. In 1915, Mr. Fabius Gwin, began an industry and used the shells from the mussels for pearl. Gwin was known as the “king of the button industry” in Indiana, and his factories paid well and employed over 300 people during the peak seasons as diggers. The shells from the White River were considered superior to Tennessee River shells, which is the major shell producing river in the United States. Gwin kept his company going until his death in 1947. However, when zippers and elastics were introduced to the market, buttons lost their popularity and the industry took a severe blow. Today, White River has a very bountiful supply of mussels but they have been protected.
Crane Naval Base, which is predominantly located in Martin County, started development during World War II, in 1940. Crane was one of many government production facilities across the Hoosier state, and started as a naval weapons depot. It was named in honor of Commodore William Montgomery Crane, the first head of the Navy’s Bureau of Ordinance.
