Dearborn County was formed in 1803 and named for Dr. Henry Dearborn, U.S. Secretary of War at that time period. Dearborn County originally included what is now Ohio County when formed. Lawrenceburg is the county seat and the largest town in the county. In 1844 the state legislature separated the portion of Dearborn County south of Laughery Creek and created the new county of Ohio on March 1, 1844.
Aurora, Indiana a town just southwest of Lawrenceburg holds claim to the “Oldest Street Fair’s in Indiana” Aurora Farmer’s Fair. The festival started in 1908 by Clarence B. Wilson, who was new to the little town by the river, began to plan a small agricultural festival. Aurora was a sight to behold on the first official day of the First Annual Farmers Fair. People came from all over, dressed in their finest outerwear, to view the agricultural presentations. There were hitching posts put up all over town to accommodate the visitors “transportation”. The old Aurora ferry, using literal horsepower (horses walked on a treadmill to turn the paddlewheels), was working overtime. Today, Second Street in Aurora is completely closed off with street rides, vendors and exhibits for the fair. The fair is traditionally scheduled for the first weekend in October.
