DECATUR COUNTY, INDIANA

Decatur County, Greensburg, Indiana Disability Attorneys

Decatur County was founded in 1822 with the county seat of Greensburg created the same year.  Decatur County has an extensive history, during the civil war, of containing a vast number of tunnels used for the underground railroad.  Greensburg is known as the town of the “courthouse tree”.

In the 1870’s, citizens of Greensburg spotted a small sprig growing at the top of the Decatur County Courthouse tower which was 110 feet above ground.  As time progressed, the sprig became four more sprigs.  Time continued to pass and before long, a Large Tooth Aspen tree was growing out of the top of the Courthouse.  Officials grew concerned that the tree might damage the roof and in 1888, they hired a steeplejack to help remove some of the shrubbery from the tree. During that time, the discovered another small sprout.

Unfortunately, the original trees died over time, but not before new sprouts could take root.  Now, for over 130 years, trees continue to sprout, grow and die atop the courthouse.  It is unclear how the first seeds ended up on the courthouse tower originally, but Greensburg would not be Greensburg without the tree.
