Pike County Indiana

PIKE County, Petersburg, Indiana Disability Attorneys

Pike County was formed on December 21, 1816 and was the first county formed after Indiana became a state.  The county was named for Zebulon Pike, famous for his Pike Expedition in 1806-1807 exploring the southwest portion of the Louisiana Purchase.  Brigadier General Pike commanded the 4th Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811 and was killed during the War of 1812.  The town of Petersburg is the county seat.

Abraham Lincoln was a frequent visitor to Pike County as he had formed many close associations, while passing through, with its citizens.  This area was later called “The Lincoln Trail”.  Lincoln left his judicial circuit and crossed the Illinois River to practice law with many of Pike County’s leading attorneys.

When coal was discovered in 1860 it changed the county’s focus and today several coal mines fuel two local power plants.
