Washington County, Indiana
Washington County is the 7th largest county in Indiana, formed in 1814, and named after U.S. President George Washington. Salem is the county seat for Washington County. The most prominent native of Washington County was John Milton Hay who was the private secretary and biographer for President Abraham Lincoln. Mr. Hay also served as Secretary of State for Presidents William McKinley and Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. His birthplace is located in Salem and has been preserved by the Washington County Historical Society.
Salem Indiana is home to Indiana’s first Farm Sanctuary (Uplands PEAK Sanctuary) stretching 20 acres, with 15 of the acres containing wooded property of trails and a sanctuary for those craving silence and the outdoors. Uplands main purpose is to rescue and rehabilitation neglected/abused farm animals and offering people the chance to experience a connection with farm animals such as pigs, cows or chickens as they are cared for in their natural surroundings. The sanctuary also provides workshops on compassionate and mindful living, vegan cooking classes and the integration of various aspects of sustainable living practices.
In the Fall of 2015, the Sanctuary was granted monies through the Pollination Project, Whole Suns Design and The Binky Foundation to add solar panels to their barn making another stride towards achieving higher self sustainability.Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
