Fulton County Indiana
Fulton County was formed in 1836 and was named for Robert Fulton, an American Engineer and inventor of the steamboat. Fulton County is home to Lake Manitou, a manmade lake created in 1827 by the federal government of the U.S. for the Potawatomi Native American tribe. Early settlers and the Potawatomi believed that a monster lived in Lake Manitou, and therefore refused to build their houses near the lake. “Lake Manitou” translates to “devil’s lake” and there are many reported sightings of a snake-like monster. The lake was created as part of the Treaty with the Potawatomi.
In 1838, the Potawatomi Trail of Death came through Rochester, Indiana. The Potawatomi Trail of Death was the forced removal by militia of some 859 members of the Potawatomi nation from Indiana to reservation lands in what is now eastern Kansas. During the journey of about 660 Miles over 61 days, more than 40 people died, most of them children. It marked the single largest Indian Removal in Indiana.Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
