Grant County was formed in 1831 with Marion Indiana serving as the county seat. Every year, Marion Indiana hosts a historical commemoration of the Battle of Mississinewa, fought there on December 17-18, 1812 and was one of the major engagements fought during the War of 1812. Mississinewa is partly derived from the Miami Indian word nimacihsinwi which means “It lies on a slope”.
Among the vast history of Grant County is the famous people who have come from Grant County. Jim Davis, artist and creator of the Garfield Comic Strip, hails from Marion Indiana but currently lives in Albany Indiana. James Dean, an iconic actor, was also born and raised in Marion Indiana. Dean starred in his most notable film, Rebel Without a Cause, playing a troubled teenager (which was far from the truth of his high school career in Marion Indiana). His premature death in a car crash at the age of 24 cemented his legend. To this day, James Dean is the first and only actor to have had two posthumous Academy Award nominations.Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
