JASPER County, Rensselaer, Indiana Disability Attorneys
Jasper County was formed in 1838 and named for Sargent William Jasper, a noted solder for the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Sgt. Jasper became famous in 1776 during bombardment of Fort Moultrie, for erecting a new flagstaff under fire after the American flag had been shot down. He was killed during the Siege of Savannah in 1779.
The county seat of Jasper is a town called Rensselaer. Rennselaer was platted in 1839 and originally named Newton. The town’s name changed to Rennselaer in 1844 after James Van Rensselaer, a merchant from New York, who took the land over from Joseph Yeoman.
Rensselaer has the charm of a small-town but located close to Chicago conveniences. Saint Joseph College is in Rensselaer and during the 1880’s-1890’s Drexel Hall (one of the first buildings to become part of the college) housed the St. Joseph’s Indian Normal School, an educational institution funded by the government and designed to educate Native American boys for ease in assimilation into the white culture. The school closed in 1896 but the building still is in use at the college.
