MONTGOMERY COUNTY, INDIANA
Montgomery County, Crawfordsville Indiana Disability Attorneys
Montgomery County was founded in 1823 from parts of Wabash New Purchase attached to Parke and Putnam Counties, and named in honor of General Richard Montgomery who fought and died in the American Revolutionary War while attempting to capture Quebec City in the Battle of Quebec.
In 1882, the first rotary jail in the U.S. was built in Crawfordsville Indiana, and is the only one still in function today. Now a museum, the rotary jail was designed as a solution to the problem of housing prisoners safely and efficiently. The builders believed their design would help maintain social order by limiting personal contact between the inmate and the jailer. A hand crank rotated the two-tiered turntable, a jailer could bring one of sixteen pie-shaped cells into the opening, allowing one prisoner in or out. The cellblock rotates in a complete circle and weights about 32 tons. The jail was immobilized in late 1930’s and was restored to working condition in 1975 when it became a museum.
