Porter County, Valparaiso Indiana Disability Attorneys
Porter County was formed in 1836 and the county seat is Valparaiso, located in northwest Indiana near Lake Michigan. Porter County contains several architectural gems bordering Lake Michigan. To the West of the Indiana Dunes is a small community of Beverly Shores. The significance of this quaint community stems back to 1933 when Robert Bartlett purchased several properties located on the Dunes and named the development Beverly Shores. During the same year, Chicago held the World’s Fair titled “Century of Progress”. Mr. Bartlett purchased and relocated five of the homes from the World’s Fair, transporting them by barges on Lake Michigan to the location. The houses were part of an exhibit “Homes of Tomorrow” where millions of people could observe the future of residential architecture and home conveniences. The five homes moved were the Rostone House, Cyprus Log House, Armco-ferro House, Florida Tropical House and the House of Tomorrow.
In 1966, the National Park Service took over the area that included Beverly Shores, and it became part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. The homeowners became lessees, with a small incentive for maintenance that caused the homes to fall into disrepair. By the turn of the 21st century, Indiana Landmarks and the National Park Service worked together and subleased the homes, with protective covenants, to individuals who would restore them. Four of the five homes are restored and are open to public tours yearly. The House of Tomorrow, due to its degree of deterioration and architecture challenges, needs nearly $2 million dollars to rehabilitate the structure.
