Shelby County Indiana

SHELBY County, Shelbyville, Indiana Disability Attorneys

Shelby County Indiana was organized in 1821 and named after Isaac Shelby, Kentucky’s first and fifth Governor.  The county seat, Shelbyville, was incorporated on January 21, 1850 and is located approximately 26 miles southeast of Indianapolis Indiana.   Shelbyville was originally inhabited by American Indians.  Shelbyville was part of the “New Purchase” of 1820, a treaty between native American Indians and the United States.  The treaty was signed in 1818 in Ohio and ceded an enormous amount of land to the U.S. Government.  The lands became Shelbyville, Indiana and were open for pioneer settlers two years later.

Shelbyville is home to the first railroad built in the state (1830’s) connecting Shelbyville to Indianapolis.  Thomas Hendricks, a Democrat from Shelbyville, served Indiana as a United States Senator, a United States representative, governor, and as Vice President under Grover Cleveland.  Shelbyville’s active Historical Society recently had Mr. Hendricks original log home rebuilt.

For many years, furniture manufacturing was the chief industry of Shelbyville since fine hardwoods were in abundance in the surrounding area.  As forests gave way to farms, the furniture business ceased to dominate the local manufacturing field.  Today Shelbyville is a community of diverse successful industries.
