STEUBEN County, Angola, Indiana Disability Attorneys
Steuben County is located in the northeast corner of Indiana and was named after Baron von Steuben, a Prussian military officer who helped train the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. In 1838, people from New York migrated west to the Vermont Settlement and created the town of Angola, named after Angola, New York and the county seat of Steuben. Before the Vermont Settlement the land was used as hunting grounds for the Potawatomi Indian Tribe.
Chief Pokagon of the Potawatomi Tribe sold one million acres of land to the state of Indiana and Illinois (Including present day Chicago), and who created Pokagon State Park which surrounds the eastern part of Lake James. Steuben County is known for its 101 natural lakes. Tourism is the economic force that influenced the growth of the community. The summer’s population growth because of the lakes and the State Park cause Angola’s population to increase 311%.
The main landmark in the City of Angola is the Civil War Monument (known as the “Mound”) in the center of the city with plaques listing the names of the 1,278 men from Steuben County who fought in the war. More men enlisted for the war from Steuben County than any other county in Indiana.
