Vermillion County Indiana
Vermillion County was formed in 1818 and included the area that later became Parke and Vermillion counties. The first settles to the area came arrived in 1816 the same year that the state of Indiana was established. The county was named for the southbound Vermilion River that flows nearby. It is one of very few counties in the U.S. that borders another state with the same county name (Vermilion County, Indiana and Vermilion County Illinois).
The county seat of Vermillion is Newport. Every year, on the first weekend of October, Newport hosts the Newport Antique Auto Hill Climb. The attraction is the 1,700-foot long 140-foot high hill, commonly called the Newport Hill. It is one of the only events where old car owners can compete and show their late model cars. The first hill climb was in 1909 and continued to 1915 when interest faded for the event. The Newport Lions Club brought the even back in 1968 and has continued to the present, with a parade, festival and many other activities added to the climb.Long Term Disability
