Whitley County was formed in 1838 and is the 49th largest county in Indiana. The county was named for Colonel William Whitley who fought in the War of 1812. In the late 1870’s, immigrants began arriving from Germany and Ireland. Whitley County has the highest county number, on license plates, as it is the last in the alphabetical order of the counties in Indiana.
Columbia City, the county seat for Whitley County, is home to the Whitley County Courthouse which was built in 1888. The courthouse is three stories tall and designed by Brentwood S. Tolan, an architect from Fort Wayne Indiana. The courthouse is constructed of Indiana limestone and has a slate roof with galvanized iron central dome.
Carved in the relief above the courthouse doors, is a prominent art work named “Heads in Relief” featuring the image of a woman (possibly lady liberty) wearing an elaborate headdress. To her right is a goose-like bird with its beak open and to the left is a wolf-like animal also with its mouth open. In 1993, this sculpture was examined as part of the Smithsonian’s “Save Outdoor Sculpture” survey and the condition are described as “undetermined”.Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
